Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré Shrine

The Basilica is a Sanctuary dedicated to Saint Anne. It is only natural then, that the first images which attract our attention would be about Saint Anne.

Even if we know very little about the life of Saint Anne, the simple fact of being the mother of Mary and the grandmother of Jesus, is sufficient for the Church to recognize and worship her for centuries.

The entire ceiling mosaic of the Basilica describes the life of Saint Anne. It tells the story of her life, the life of a Jewish woman in that era. It speaks of her virtues, which by the way should be ours too. The vault also illustrates to us her glorification.

At the heart of the apse, just above the main altar, we see Saint Anne, the Virgin Mary and the child Jesus. Saint Anne is giving a fruit to Jesus; which is not just a treat from a grandmother to her grandson, it is a marvelous symbol of His Mission as the Redemptor and Saviour of Humanity. It is not a Fruit of Death, like the fruit that Adam and Eve ate, but a Fruit of Life saving us from original sin.

In this glorification, these three people are surrounded by the many Blessed of our church, as well as Saint Joseph, Saint Joachim and Saint John the Baptist. In the background, one can see a large orchestra of elegant musical angels.

Canyoning Québec

Winter
Jean-Larose Falls is the only location in North America to do ice canyoning. Canyoning-Québec offers to discover an amazing and zen (frozen!) hidden landscape. The basic techniques are similar to the ones of summer time except that the rappel is done on frozen ice cascades in dry conditions. Ropes and crampons are used to go down and it is important to differenciate this activity with ice climbing. Ice canyoning is easier and will please anyone doing winter activities like snowshoeing or cross country skiing. As a reference, the most « difficult » part of the excursion is to climb the 400 steps of the staircase after the descent.

The excursion will take you to the breathtaking 41 meter frozen and dry last drop of Jean-Larose Falls. There is an initiation clinic to learn the rappelling technique in two easy 20 meters steep slopes before approaching the great drop.

Outings are conditional to sufficient ice formation and when temperature is below 0°C. The site is usually protected from wind. The ice-canyoning season can be interrupted for a few days when temperatures are abnormaly high.

Le Sentier Mestachibo

The Mestachibo trail links the Saint- Ferréol-les-Neiges church to the Jean-Larose waterfalls which is at the bottom of Mont-Sainte-Anne Resort. «Le Mestashibo» follows the course of the Sainte-Anne-du-Nord river for most of its length. It gives access to majestic sights in a natural area previously inaccessible.

The views are, like the trail, very hilly and will allow you to discover a mature tree population, many landslides and cliffs. At mid-course, two belvederes await hikers, which give a breathtaking view of the canyon and the river rapids. In addition, two suspended bridges, of a length of 70 meters, will help you cross the Sainte-Anne river.

The trail can be done both ways. From the church of the village of Saint-Ferreol-les-Neiges, you are going down the river. From the base of Mont-Sainte-Anne, you are going up the river.

Since the trail is quite inaccessible, VTT or mountain bikes cannot have access to it, which is excellent for your tranquillity.
